ABOUT AKUPARA YOGA

Amrei - that's me

When I think of turtles, I think of cherishing life and using the currents to my advantage. They move slowly and consistently, always having an energy reserve. I aspire to be as calm as a turtle and as liquid as water.

As long as I can remember I loved movement and it brings me more joy every day. Running through the forest, climbing trees, swimming, dancing, fighting. You name it, I’m in!

It has led me to study Sports Science and become a Yoga teacher. I did my first 500h of Ashtanga with my wonderful teacher Svenja, where I learnt the traditional practice as well as a therapeutic approach to movement.I am continuing my studies going towards finishing my 800h of education soon.

I love to see the happiness on my students faces when they feel the energy moving through their bodies or achieve that pose that they’ve been struggling with for months.

I want to bring the happiness and joy of movement to people around the world through Yoga.
That is how Akupara Yoga came to be. 🙂

Akupara Yoga

In Hindu cosmology, the turtle Akupara supports the world on its back. She is steadfast and the foundation of life. Her hard shell signifies protection and endurance, while her slow, deliberate movements symbolize patience and the importance of a calm, steady pace in both spiritual and physical endeavors.

The turtle is a rich icon not just in Indian mythology in the form of Akapura but in many other cultures as well. Through histories, mythologies, and great works of art, the turtle wanders. She masters distance, acquires knowledge, becomes wise, and even masters time itself!

Like her, we move deliberately and consistently – without ever holding on to the goal we wander towards. For one because wandering is part of the process an we can never skip the way to the goal. So why don’t we rather take the time to enjoy the view. Furthermore, holding on to what the practice is supposed to do will only create one more barrier on the way. Rather, trust the process and enjoy!

Thank you to my brother for giving my studio its name and the fact that he hit the nail on the head with comparing me to a turtle. 🙂

What is Yoga?

The philosophical source of Ashtanga Yoga is the Yoga Sutra (Guide for Yoga).

The first two verses read:

Atha yoga-anushasanam

Now, here yoga

Yogas citta vritti nirodha

Yoga is the coming to rest of the activities in the mind/inner perceptual space

Yoga is the way in which we calm down our mind as well as the result – calmness. The way can be anything: Asana practice, breathwork, garden work, drawing – as long as the focus is only on the activity at hand. You start this journey to calmness with the first step and stay on it with every step that you take in dedication and with focus.

This is what I try to do every day with Akupara Yoga and this is what I want to give to everyone who decides to join me for any course.
